"Hey, Watch This" is the title of the "newish" Cheech and Chong movie. I watched it on NetFlix the other night. This is the first time in ages that I can't connect a movie back to the 60's band "the Turtles"...but not too worry kiddies, all is well in Lotus Land.
In it's place is the milestone of being the first movie in recent memory that I was in tears of laughter for most of a movie...and for that I give this flick 5 full bleary eyed stars.
I have two short stories to tell before I deliver the goods.
#1 Apparently one of my many ex-wives used to baby-sit for Tommy Chong in the North Vancouver/Lynn Canyon hills. His current and gorgeous blonde wife used to be one of the little girls n the neighborhood, riding around on her Schwinn bicycle.
#2 Back in the day, I used to see Tommy up on the Sunshine Coast, driving around in his red Porsche 944.
Flash forward a hundred or so years.
I'm working on the Sea to Sky Highway job..in the West Van section. When I can , I take my lunch at the Caulfeild Mall.
One fine day, I'm in the line-up at Starbucks...waiting for my breakfast sandwich...And I notice a fantastic looking blonde woman in front of me. Spectacular...out of this world gorgeous. Off to the right is a weathered looking old guy...looking very happy with himself.
My gaze goes back to the blonde woman. I tried not to stare, but that strategy didn't work for long.
The blonde goddess delivers the Starbucks to the old guy, with a kiss and a smile.
I think to myself...wow..the benefits of being filthy rich.
A random guy comes up to the old guy and says...
"How's it going, Tommy?"
My brain gears slowly clunk into motion.
The old guy replies...In a relaxed, stoner tone..."I'm doin' good man...doing good"
Tommy Chong...the man...and his wife, down at the Starbucks in West Van...to fuel up for the day.
Seriously, one of my best days on that job. Seeing Tommy Chong in his element, relaxed and cool. I tried to think up a plan to get him to come to our jobsite for a safety talk or something, but I couldn't figure out the right angle..
A while ago, I watched a flick about Tommy's trip to jail for selling bongs over the internet...9 months of Federal time. Excellent movie too....especially when you see the politics behind the whole charade.
I know a bullshit call when I see one...and putting Tommy Chong in jail in the interest of national security....post9/11....is a phenomenal bullshit call, that only made the man ..and the legend...stronger.
Oh, and if you are wondering...Dave's not here.
